Pink, Pink, Pink, Pink

Rose continues to dominate at our store when the weather is toasty.  From the salmon pink stuff in Provence to the ruby colored, spicy roses from Santa Barbara, it's all pretty damn good.  What do you prefer?

Let Your Arrow Go, Where's Saldo, Portuguese Wine Tasting, and Is That a Droid on Your Bottle?

Welcome to the 5th intallment of "WINE PARAPHERNALIA THAT MAKES US UNCOMFORTABLE AND/OR SCARED" (or W.P.T.M.U.U.A.O.S. for short)

Well, while searching for another item for this series we found something so glorious, it made us scared.  Some would say 'glorious' is a little over-the-top but I think those people lack vision...and heart....and hutzpah.

Yes folks...that's a droid on your bottle.

If you think for one second we aren't working 'round the clock to get these in our store, you lack vision...and heart...and hutzpah (and decency).

Portuguese Wine Tasting

7-9pm

$15/person

Five wine flight + artisanal cheeses from Auntie Em's Kitchen

RSVP to: info@cowineco.com or (323) 478-1985

Please join us for our first ever all-Portuguese wine tasting.  Were it not for David Duman of Vinos Unico wines, we would probably not be doing this tasting.  We always enjoyed Portuguese reds, whites and bubblies but never found a great collection under one roof until David came along and started pouring some of these mind-blowing selections.

David will be here to school you on varietals you've probably never heard of like Trincadeira, Aragones, Encruzado, Bical and Cerceal.  And by 'school' I mean 'educate' and by 'educate' i mean 'get you drunk'.

Quinta de Cabriz Branco 2008 - Dao

From Dave Phinney, the winemaker behind The Prisoner, comes the Saldo Zinfandel 2008. Last year the innaugural release of this wine made grown men cry it was so good. This year we're hoping to get a few kittens and puppies to break down sobbing.   $27.99/btl - limited supply!

Winemaker Notes:

The 2008 Saldo is rich, ripe, and full-bodied, with aromas of black cherry and bramble fruit. The tannins are soft but the wine has a huge mid-palate. The soft, lush finish lingers. 2008 was a perfect vintage for Saldo. The hot weather was ideal for creating ripe zinfandel. Drink now and enjoy over the next five years.

“There are some wines that silence the panel with their greatness, wines that knock us back in our seats to stare, slack-jawed.  This is one of them.  It’s not that it’s huge, mouth-filling in flavor and tough as nails; it’s more that it’s incredibly succulent, as if built out of some sort of stone that gives up juice. For all its intensity and ferrous minerality, it remains fresh, the red fruit and spice seemingly to go on forever.” - Wine & Spirits Magazine

NEW ZEALAND

Folks, we're disappointed with our options for what to celebrate tonight.  I mean sure, it's Tim Meadows' birthday, but you gotta ask yourself, is that really enough reason to get out and taste some wine?  I guess if you REALLY REALLY loved The Ladies Man then fine, woo hoo, wine tasting.  But we need something more.  Come on out for one of the best viogniers ever (which we've never poured @ a Friday tasting) and the crazily priced cab/syrah blend from Rothschild.  Sure, the other 3 are great too, but we're playing favorites tonight.

And Let Your Arrow Go

Auntie Em's Restaurant is doing a Valentine's Day pick-up menu this year and we've worked with chef/owner Terri Wahl to pair wines to go with each course (see below) so all you have to worry about on that special night is what you're wearing, your breath, your tendency to ramble on a little too much, your severe lack of rhythm on the dance floor, your incontinent dog, etc. etc.  Really, you have nothing to worry about.

Anyway, here's how it works -- read the menu below, choose your dinner, call Auntie Em's (323-660-0681) or email to reserve your food, then pick up your food @ Auntie Em's on the 14th and swing by Colorado Wine Company for your wines.  Dinner $28/person, wine prices below

Starter

Cream of Asparagus SoupAsparagus wine pairings usually scare people off because it is kinda tough.  Whites work better though reds can be suitable.  You need enough acid to handle the asparagus and enough body to handle the cream so we recommend the Moncaro Ca’Ruptae Verdicchio from Italy for @ $11.99/btl.  If you can’t live without your red wine, we would pair a light Cabernet Franc like our Cave de Saumur from the Loire for $11.99/btl.

Main Course

Lamb Shepards Pie with Creamed Bloomsdale SpinachOne of our favorite reds for lamb is the Alary Cairanne Cotes du Rhone for $19.99/btl.  This is primarily grenache with some syrah to give the dark fruit a black pepper touch that will pair beautifully with the Sheppard’s Pie.  But we would be remiss not to suggest a nutty brown Belgian Ale with this course which would be amazing.  Try the Brasserie Dupont Moinette Brune Ale for $10.99/btl.

Braised Lamb Shank pulled off the bone, topped with creamed spinach and mashed potatoes from Wieser FarmsFor the more stewed, gamey lamb flavors in this dish we’d try the Gardies Mas Las Cabes Languedoc Rouge for $14.99/btl or a rustic sangiovese like this new odd Tuscan blend from Icario for $19.99 (70% sangiovese/20% teroldego/10% merlot).

 Or

Roasted Vegetable Shepards PieFirst thoughts are usually the best pairings and Spanish grenache came to mind for this one.  Try our Coto de Hayas Garnacha Centennaria for $14.99/btl which has a medium-body which won’t cover up the veggies, but big enough blackberry and white pepper flavors to add complexity to the pairing.  Or for white, try an Italian pinot bianco like our Vignalta Agno Casto Pinot Bianco for $19.99/btl.

Roasted baby root vegetables from Mc Grath Farms, topped with sautéed wild mushrooms and mashed potatoes from Wieser FarmsDefinitely a pinot noir or cru Beaujolais for this one.  For pinot we recommend the Cazar Russian River Pinot Noir @ $18.99/btl which has a gorgeous mushroomy/cherry/rosemary thing going on all on its lonesome.   If you want to go a little lighter and a little less spicy, try the Pierre Chermette Cru Beaujolais for $16.99/btl.  White would work too….try the Terre Rouge Enigma from the Sierra Foothills – this is a blend of Marsanne/Viognier/Roussanne and its creamy texture and floral notes would be pretty damned lovely with root veggies.

Dessert

Heart Shaped Chocolate Ganache Cake for TwoDefinitely our HM Borges Old Reserve Malmsey 10 year Madeira for $35.99/btl.  It’s a big bottle (750ml), but the sugar will preserve it on your counter and more than likely, you’ll drink it all with this cake.  Another idea would be our Chateau du Jau Muscat de Rivesaltes for $24.99/btl (500ml) – the citrus and custard flavors would be a great opposite paring to the chocolate.

Listen, I was wondering. Can I ask you a question? Uh... was your father a meat burgler? Here's why I ask: because it looks like somebody stole two fine hams and shoved them down the back of your dress.
