Pink, Pink, Pink, Pink

Rose continues to dominate at our store when the weather is toasty.  From the salmon pink stuff in Provence to the ruby colored, spicy roses from Santa Barbara, it's all pretty damn good.  What do you prefer?

Experience Palpitations As You Take Your White Horse Up the Big, Manly Mountain and Taste Some Sake

Experience Palpitations As You Take Your White Horse Up the Big, Manly Mountain and Taste Some Sake (or EPAYTYWHUBMM for short)

Finally, the 2008 Sake tasting we've been promising many of you for months.  Our excitement can best be summarized in haiku...

Rice wine in glass

life is short

meet my tummy

Join us this Saturday for a whole new sake line-up including the very hard to find Ishizuchi Niogri Sake which just happens to be the best Nigori style sake we've ever had.

Ishizuchi Shirouma "White Horse" Nigori

This one is rather potent and will sneak up on you like a ninja with a Jagermeister shot if you're not careful.  High in alcohol but not 'hot' on your palate, this unfiltered nigori sake has a flowery nose with a hint of anise -- rich and starchy, but not sugary sweet.  Remarkable.

(we have no picture for this one because the all-mighty Google claimed it didn't exist)

Otokoyama "Man's Mountain" Junmai

This popular sake is extremely dry, light, soft, smooth and alkaline with a rich palate.  That's a lot of descriptors....you'll just have to try it for yourself.

Harushika Tokimeki "Palpitation of Sake" Sparkling Junmai Sake

This festive sparkling sake is subtley sweet, but ends dry on the palate.  We get notes of sesame, pears, bananas and melon.  Low alcohol  SMV –80, acidity 5.5

Tsuki no Katsura Ginjo

If there is any brewery that isn't afraid of experimenting, it's the Tsuki no Katsura brewery in the Fushimi district of Kyoto in western Japan. One of the oldest and most regal of breweries in the area, it is single-handedly responsible for the fact that nigori sake even exists today as a commercial product.  But, this Saturday, we do not taste their Nigori...oh no...on Saturday we taste their ridiculously good Ginjo sake.  It's yeasty, nutty and floral all the same time, finishing with a smooth texture that would make you smile even on tax day.

Ohyama Ginsuika "Big Mountain" Ginjo

The aroma is what stands out with this selections.... scents of citrus fruit and roses followed by a light, soft texture and tastes of melon, pear, and a faint banana twist (btw -- "Faint Banana" was the name of my band in highschool).  This is one selection where you'll see how much a decent wine glass makes a difference in smelling the complex aromas of sake.

The Future Is In Plastics

Many of you stopped in wondering where those cool plastic, stemless wineglasses were that you read about in the LAtimes recently.  Well, now we got 'em.  From GoVino, finally a fairly elegant plastic wineglass for those Hollywood Bowl jaunts this Summer.  And that little thumb indentation in the side assures that after that 2nd glass, gravity doesn't take away your wine.  But if it does, they're shatterproof.  Refill, enjoy.   Sold individually wrapped for $2.25/glass.

Where Did All The Diners Go?

Every once in awhile a cool building goes up for sale in Eagle Rock and Jen and I sit there hoping that something interesting goes in that reflects the non-chain feel of Eagle Rock, and compliments the neighborhood on the whole.  Well, we've decided to announce the most recent business/building for sale here in the newsletter in the hopes that some of our readers and customers have always dreamed of owning a cool, 50's diner.

Cindy's Coffee Shop has a 22 space parking lot, income from a billboard onsite, and has been used in dozens of feature films and commercials over the years for that perfect, orange, 50's interior.  Please, somebody do something great (again, or keep a great thing going) here!

Call Douglas Whisenand @ The Piken Company for details:  (818) 755-2737

See You Soon,

John and Jen

Sushi Bar Assistant: How come I always have to get the sake? You listen well... for thirty years, you make the fish, I get the sake. If this were the military, I'd be General by now.
Hattori Hanzo: Oh, so you'd be General, huh? If you were General, I'd be Emperor, and you'd STILL get the sake. So shut up and get the sake.
